Alex Honnold: A Soul Freed

2 462 Vizionare 252 K

On June 3, 2017, Alex Honnold became the first person to climb the 3,000-vertical-foot granite face of Yosemite’s El Capitan, alone, without ropes, a feat that was chronicled in the Academy Award-winning documentary, Free Solo. In his New York Times op-ed column, Bret Stephens wrote that with that act, “Honnold gave an extraordinary gift to everyone who believes that the limit of human achievement is far from being reached.” The climber and journalist explore questions like: How do you manage fear? What's the line between daring and recklessness? What should we sacrifice in the pursuit of excellence? And what is the connection between freedom and happiness?

The complete lack of arrogance in someone who is probably one of the very few that I would completely say they have earned the right to be so makes Alex a person I am in awe of. What a genuinely nice guy I could listen to for hours. It feels like he shares his confidence with you and makes you feel like if he can do what he has then surely I can do whatever I set my mind to (albeit on a much smaller scale!).

He’s a good example of how not all sociopaths are bad people. I think he genuinely cares about people in his own way. Doesn’t seem the type to manipulate or use people in a devious way. It doesn’t seem like he has emotional connections like most people; love doesn’t come naturally and emotional connections run somewhat shallow. Just the vibe I get from him. He’s like a real life Spock.

Maybe so... though to be fair, I've seen that dynamic with other of Honnold's interviewers or with fellow panel-guests. (Karmita on Nobel video comes to mind). Most people fear heights A LOT (tho few admit it)... hence, all the "sweaty palms" comments on climbing vids. I think at least some of what we see with this guy and other interviewers is the product of the _discomfort_ Alex' feats stir up in others. Most of us do not have a category to place cliff climbing into. It's hard to relate to even by analogy. Imo, these perceived "criticisms" are often people's brains attempting to make sense of & categorize what Honnold does. (The brain does this to relieve said _discomfort.)_ Or maybe the interviewer figures everyone gushes over Alex and was trying to not be that guy (for Alex' sake). M Or..... maybe you're right. Maybe, sitting next to Alex, the interviewer felt like a 'beta' and what we see was defense mechanism. I have no idea. I'm just bored and felt like typing. Thanks for reading :]

Alex Honnold is a guy who climbed things....like many people do, all their lives. If hes humble its because he sees the truth inthat there is nothing special about doing what you have trained to do all your life. I watched what he does. I have seen bodies flying down mountain inclines ...dead and flopping like ragdolls. Climbing is a super high risk venture that can take your life in an instant.....no looking back, once you fall, in wrong setup, you have only your final thought for a second or two. Our marveling at this is absurd. If you need a knifes edge life and death adventure, become a police officer and get your thrill while truly helping others and yourself. There are many muchmore satisfying ways to take high adrenalin risks while helping others.....rather than just getting to the top if this....no one saved or helped and the only thing left to say is " whats for lunch?"

    1. Tyler
      Tyler
      Acum 19 Zile

When he said physically able, he was encompassing people who actually have the experience of free climbing el cap. You can be in amazing physical shape and be a great climber, but it doesn't mean you can simply free climb all the routes on el cap without a solid amount of time invested. To even consider climbing el cap free solo, you should be extremely capable at free climbing it without error, which takes a LOT of time invested specifically on el cap. There are like 40-50 people at most who have free climbed el cap when including the easier routes and out of those some aren't around anymore and some are no longer physically capable of it. So, his number isn't likely THAT far off. The main point of what he was saying is that the difference when free soloing for the people who do have the physical capability and experience free climbing it is mostly mental.

interesting. Only... the technique / mechanics of climbing are actually different gear vs no gear. The ropes provide climbers 'safety,' yes, but ropes also provide them other benefits. Whereas when you ride helmet-free, this doesn't change the mechanics of the motorcycle riding. To place free soloing a 3,000 ft cliff into a sort of 'dare devil' category is overly-simplistic. To put it mildly.

Alex is so interesting, engaging, humble, honest, self-efffacing, and intelligent. He is one of my favorite athletes. Bret does a very nice job of asking questions. One question I would love to know the answer to for free solo... What if while up on a big wall, one of your shoes fails? (if the rubber detaches from the sole) Or if you pull a ligament in one of your arms or legs? , or what happens if you are in a section of wall that has ZERO holds to advance? Or say the outcrop you had rehearsed on before no longer exists? (cracked off by another climber for example, or now, super slippery with bird droppings). You seem to conquer fear and mitigate risk by extensive preparation, however it seems there are low probability events that could leave you stranded 2,000 feet up...
